Uses of sunlight in construction and renovation

The
rays of the sun can be our best friend– she heats up the home in the
winter by penetration of natural light during the day. They can also be
our greatest enemy for the same reasons. How can we exploit the sun for
illumination without it allowing in too much light or extreme heat?
In Israel almost every day is a sunny
day. Israelis experiencing a rainy or cloudy day can be divided into two
groups. Those who rejoice that the winter has arrived
and are quickly disappointed
after a day or two when the rainy days have passed by, and those who
find the dim weather depressing and wait eagerly for the better weather.
Both these groups realize the
advantages and disadvantages related to sunlight. for the same reasons.
The sun’s rays heats the home, they can be blinding and can even cause
damage to the colors of the furniture or the pictures on the
walls. Therefore, we must know how to achieve the best advantages of the
sun’s rays without the disadvantages. How can we do this?
You have to recognize the directions
that there are openings in
the home :
South: The ultimate
side – sun rays
penetrate both in the summer also in the winter, but an external
retractable shade over the window can
prevent the sun’s penetration in the summer without stopping the
penetration of light and heat in
the winter.
East: The sun
penetrates in the morning hours in winter and summer, if you want
to avoid the sunlight it is worthwhile to close shutters or to use
opaque light colored curtains.
West: This is the
side that is hard to decide if its " good " or " bad ". In the summer
there is a pleasant westerly breeze mainly in the coastal plain, but the
sun’s rays penetrate in the afternoon, heating up the home and can be
damaging to the furniture and
pictures. So do not
forget in order to avoid the sunlight it is worthwhile to close shutters
or to use
opaque light colored curtains in the afternoon.
North: The sun’s
rays do not directly penetrate through and therefore the light tends to
be whiter with a less yellow tint.
When you plan your house you can
choose locations of the rooms according to your desire. It is
recommended to locate the kitchen in the north side where it is cooler –
the kitchen usually being the hottest part of the home.
Many people love to wake in the
morning with sunlight, they will be happy if their bedroom will be
located on the east side. In
the south and west it is recommended to locate the living room.
The directions of the
windows on different
spaces in each room will affect effect the positioning of the furniture
and light fittings. Therefore is recommended to get professional advice
when deciding where to place furniture so that it will best utilize the
feeling that you want to achieve.
